Why do alphalens quantiles overlap?

Hi,

When using alphalens to determine the strength of a factor, I often notice that the quantiles overlap?

E.g.,

Quantile : min --> max
Quantile 1 : -0.05 --> 1.23
Quantile 2 : 0.89 --> 1.46
Quantile 3 : 1.02 --> 1.88

Why aren't the quantiles distinct?

Thanks,

Jack

Because the quantiles are computed daily (or at any frequency the factor is computed at). They are not computed on the full factor value range. That would be a look ahead bias

Thanks Luca - makes sense.
