What market data is available?

I came here in search of a platform suitable to (partially) automate my trading. The programming seems easy and flexible enough. Though I'm not yet sure in what extent I'm able mix manual and automated steps yet. I'm however more concerned about available market data.

I understand only stocks can be traded, I assume this includes ETF's. I wonder however in what extent other market data is available. E.g. I love vix as an indicator, but also interest rates and spreads, Advance/decline data and futures term structures can be of interest. Is there somewhere an overview what data is available? Is it possible to retrieve data from other resources such as a linked IB account or from a file?

On Quantopian we have price, fundamental, and custom data available for all US equities (stocks + ETFs) from 2002 until today. All of the data is point-in-time and includes securities that are no longer trading (ie LEH) to avoid survivorship bias. The price data is minute-level and has OHLCV values. The fundamental data is from Morningstar where you can query over 600 fields. We also have the Quantopian Store were vendors offer free data and paid versions of sentiment data, earnings releases, dividends, clinical trials, and more. You can also import your own data to create a trading signal. You can use all of this data to research strategies, backtest it on historical data, and then live trade with IB.

We don't have VIX natively on the platform, but it's been a popular request and we'd like to integrate it. We're also working right now to add futures as a second asset class in Quantopian.

Cheers,
Alisa
