why does financial assets dont exist? in data reference they exist, but in research i cant use it
The data field financial_assets in the Morningstar dataset isn't widely reported. The definition of this field is:
Fair values, as of the balance sheet date, of all assets resulting from contracts that meet the criteria of being accounted for as
derivative instruments, net of the effects of master netting arrangements.
The reality is most companies do not hold derivative instruments, or at least account for them as such.
There are however over 950 companies, and over 5000 unique records, reporting financial_assets between 1-1-2002 and 1-4-2020 . The financial_assets field does 'exist' it's just the majority of companies don't report holding derivative instruments. Those that don't will have a value of nan in this field.
