use o ETFs in a contest

Hello,

Is it ok to use an ETF in a contest? One of my entries uses ETFs instead of stocks, primarily because I have a strategy of investing internationally.

I could also go 1 step further and use OTCs or ADRs -but looks like this framework doesn't allow for ADRs.

That aside, the backtest and contest are giving poor marks for this strategy but it is performing better than my entries ranked higher than it.

Q for Viridian,

I see that your entry is #1 in leaderboard. Can you tell me if you got paid or had been in the past?

thanks

Hi Kamal -

As far as I know you can use ETFs, but not leveraged ones (see https://www.quantopian.com/open).

However, I don't think Quantopian is too keen on ETFs for the hedge fund, as direct investments (although they could be used as indicators). The direction I've seen is to use the Q1500US as a base universe, which does not contain ETFs; it is just company stocks (see the help page for the definition of the Q1500US).

How will I diversify across borders without an ETF? quantopian doesn't allow for using ADRs either.

thanks
