Slices as a data structure?

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all that you do at Quantopian and the community members that participate. It really is a fun platform to play around with for home gamers like myself. ... the tutorials that are posted are great, and I'm trying to combine a few concepts from two different tutorials.
The issue that I'm facing is not understanding the 'slices' data structure. I'm calling fundamentals data in my own function, and can't seem to convert it to a float, in order to manipulate it. I know that this is a simple issue, but I'm pulling my hair out. Thanks in advance you have some thoughts.
