Rank versus Zscore when combining factors?

Is there a good rule of thumb when to use rank versus zscore when combining factors? It seems like on one hand zscore does not handle outliers as well, but perhaps the zscore has better quality information for those points not outliers? Does it make sense to winsorize a zscore to eliminate outliers in an attempt to get the best of both worlds?

Anyway I am new and just trying to gain intuition what the rules of thumb are for using these are ranking when combining factors.
