Question: from Pipeline, how to filter out those that have small population within a classifier?

Hi all,

I am trying out some relative valuation ideas within peer groups. In the case of using the built-in classifier Fundamentals.morningstar_industry_code, the problem is that some peer group have small count. For example, industry 20531074 is the Consumer Packaged Goods - Confectioners industry currently only have two securities in it: Equity(3695 [HSY]), Equity(22802 [MDLZ]). I would like to filter those out of pipeline, because I wouldn't like to pick the top and bottom of a class of say 2.

I cannot figure out how to do this with pipeline. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

William

Hi William,

This is an interesting question! If I understand you correctly, there isn't a built-in way to do what you're asking for in Pipeline, but it turns out you can build a CustomFactor to compute peer counts pretty cleanly using np.unique, and then you can use that to build the filter you want.

I've attached a notebook with an example implementation.
