This algorithm chooses a portfolio by comparing the ratio of preferred shares in the treasury to total preferred shares. Preferred shares typically have a higher yield than common shares, so a preferred stock buyback should have a larger impact on cash flow than a common stock buyback. It doesn't look like preferred stock buybacks are very common, but companies that buy back preferred stock seem to outperform the market.
