Notebooks 403 : Forbidden?

cannot use Notebooks anymore? wow.

A 403 error in notebooks is typically a browser settings issue. Quantopian's research environment relies on third party cookies and cross site tracking to protect user's intellectual property. Those two features must be enabled in your browser. Not having these enabled can cause issues.

Here are some browser specific instructions to maybe get research working:

  • Chrome: In preferences, find the cookies menu. Enable the switch that says "Allow sites to save and read cookie data (Recommended)",
and disable the "Block third party cookies" switch.
  • Firefox: In preferences, find the cookies and site data menu. Check the box that says "Accept cookies and site data from websites"
and make sure the box that blocks Third-Party Cookies is unchecked.
  • Safari: In preferences, go to the privacy menu. Make sure cross site tracking is unchecked.

If none of these things work, try disabling all extensions, and re-enabling them one a time to find which one is causing issues. If you find one that is causing the Quantopian site to break, try whitelisting Quantopian.com and Dynoquant.com. Those are the two domains that Quantopian uses.

There may be other issues with your network or computer firewall or simply that your browser is not refreshing after settings were changed and working from cache. If all else fails contact Quantopian support (the link at the bottom of this page).

Hope that helps!

Dan,
thanks. it works on my Chrome. not working on Brave browser.

@Jiwei Xu There is a good chance that Quantopian will not run in the Brave browser. One of the hallmarks of that browser is, out of the box, it blocks cross-site tracking. I'm not sure this can be re-configured. Quantopian relies on cross-site tracking to function properly. There are really two 'sites' or domains associated with Quantopian when working within notebooks - Quantopian.com and Dynoquant.com. Tracking is done between these two for notebook functionality.

Thanks. This helped. Working on Brave.

I got the same issue in Safari, following the suggestion here, problem still persists. Any idea?

@Jack Chan

The 403 error is one of three things. 1) browser settings, 2) network settings, or 3) computer firewall or some computer network issue.

To ensure it's not your browser, is there another browser you could try? Possibly Chrome. If it works in one browser but not another then it is a browser setting issue. You could try disabling all extensions, and re-enabling them one a time to find which one may be causing the issue. Also, try whitelisting both quantopian.com and dynoquant.com (those are the two domains that Quantopian uses). Also, the setting for Safari under the tab for 'Privacy' try both checking AND unchecking the box for 'Website tracking'. Also, try restarting your browser after each change.

If neither browser works then it may be something with the network. Is it possible to log onto a different network? Possibly use your phone as a hotspot and connect via your cellular network? If it works via your phone then there is something in the network settings. Not much you can do if you are on a company network. If it's your home network, perhaps reboot your router?

Finally, try logging into Quantopian using a different computer if possible. Sometimes there are some firewall or network settings which are enforced by the computer. Try turning the firewall off if it is on.

Those are some things to try. Open up a support request if none of these things work. We could perhaps do a web call and share screens to sort things out.

Thanks Dan! It works now after I enabled "Prevent Cross-Site Tracking". Thanks a lot!

@Jack Chan Glad to hear you solved it. That check box in Safari is a bit confounding. To me it's backwards (and should be unchecked) but it works when the box is checked. Whatever works?
