As a matter of curiosity, does it make sense to try to find a middle ground and only use the median when necessary? If we suppose the mean is what we would truly prefer under ideal circumstances, with the median representing what we might have to settle for, there might exist an effective strategy for determining when to use which.
Probably not worth a bit of the effort! But something I will consider (or possibly post about).
