I am new to Quantopian and I am a bit confused on the data that is provided for free. Is the free data only the previous data close or does it include live current prices on stocks?
Live prices on current stocks are delayed by 15 minutes. Live prices are used when you deploy your algorithm for live trading. Once you've written your algorithm and tested it in minute mode, then you can press the "deploy to live trading" button and it will start getting the live minutely updates. Obviously, if the markets are closed, it won't do anything until the market opens the next day.
Also, when you trade real money there is no 15 minute delay in prices.
Backtesting and research have access to minutely prices from 2002 through the previous trading day. Backtesting and research do not have access to minutely prices of today's data. The day's data is uploaded overnight.
