Kernel "not connecting" - new user

Hi there,

I've connected to the Cloned from "Getting Started Tutorial - Lesson 1" notebook however am unable to connect to the kernel - it simply gave me the message regarding not being able to connect and how it'd keep trying, however the connection status remains at "Not Connected" in red.

I've turned off all the brower security settings for this (I'm using Brave browser on Windows 10) and have raised a support ticket this afternoon but can't see any evidence of that in my history, so raising this to ensure it gets visibility.

Would really appreciate this being solved soon as I'm desperate to begin the tutorials!!

Thanks!

@Rohan Barber Sorry to hear you are having issues.

Not connecting in notebooks (often accompanied by a 403 error) is typically a browser settings issue. Quantopian's research environment relies on third party cookies and cross site tracking to protect user's intellectual property. Those two features must be enabled in your browser. Not having these enabled can cause issues. Since you are using the Brave browser this is probably the issue. By default, this browser blocks both of these.

There is a Brave browser setting called 'shields down' which can be set for each site. Make sure this is set as 'shields down' for both quantopian.com and dynoquant.com. Those are the two domains that Quantopian uses in the notebook environment.

Try making that change. That should fix it and get you up and running.

Hi Dan,

Very much appreciate the prompt reply, thanks! This site came very highly recommended and I'm excited about completing the tutorials and getting researching!!

I've managed to resolve the '403 error' by powering down my Brave shields as you described, and have added both quantopian.com and dynoquant.com to my brave security whitelists, however i'm still getting a 'Not Connected' error on the kernel.

I fear this may be a Brave issue, as I've just taken similar steps on Chrome and it appears to works, thus I will continue on Chrome henceforth - not my preferred browser but worth it to access the content here which looks great.

Thanks again for prompt assistance Dan, appreciated!

Good to hear you got things working with Chrome. The Brave browser, by design, tries to limit cross-site tracking. Unfortunately, Quantopian relies on this feature for notebook security. One may not be able to disable this behavior entirely and therefore may not be able to run Quantopian notebooks in the Brave browser.

We here at Quantopian don't have a lot of experience with Brave. Do let us know if you are able to get notebooks working with it. There have been several other users with similar issues and they may appreciate hearing your fix if there is one.

BTW, welcome! Please reach out in the forums here, or to us in support, if you have any other issues going forward.
