As many of you will already know, the python community lost a luminary a few weeks ago: John Hunter, creator of Matplotlib. John's close friend Fernando Perez wrote a really lovely eulogy last week, which spoke to John's achievements and his character.
Fernando also introduced the community to the fund established for the education of John's three daughters. I only had the pleasure of meeting John once, during lunch at PyData. He gave me lots of encouragement and advice, mostly about having three kids, since my wife was expecting our third around that time. In one short lunch two things were clear: John was a genius, and John prized fatherhood. Helping to provide his girls with an education is an incredibly fitting way to thank him for Matplotlib and his myriad other contributions.
