Hi All- I am new to Quantopian and this is my first post.
I was trying to write up a code to buy AXP whenever it crosses its 20dma provided there is no open position. Also i would close this trade whenever it drops below the 20dma. For some reason i seem not to be getting any results. I also tried printing the Price and moving average variables and i feel like the moving average it not getting calculated properly (even after 20 days). Can somebody help please.
Hi Suprateek, if you run a full backtest and navigate to the 'Transaction Details' tab, you can see that your algorithm was placing trades. However, its only buying or selling 1 share at a time, so on a $1M portfolio, you won't see these changes visually in the graph and the returns are less than 0.1%. If you run the same code on a smaller capital base (ie $1000), then you will see the returns.
Grant's example invested the entire $1M portfolio for long positions and closed the position to cover. In general, it's more robust to use the order_target methods because they'll scale with your portfolio size instead of blindly ordering a static number of shares. If you're interested in looking at other moving average examples, try searching the forums for inspiration!
