How does fundamental data work?

Is morningstar data always quarterly, unless otherwise specified? Or are quarterly and annual reports included in the data depending on which day you are viewing (e.g. when a company releases their annual report with earnings). I'm trying to correlate data with values listed on morningstar but finding inconsistencies that I can't explain. Help much appreciated!

Could you tell more about the inconsistencies? Otherwise just print all the values for a given variable for a given stock in a given year (e.g. sales of IBM in 2014) and check by yourself (and then work accordingly like, if it is quarterly and you need annual you sum up the last four quarters, if its last 12M and you need last quarter you subtract 12M now from 12M a quarter from now and so on).

Most of the data points are quarterly metrics, some of them are daily metrics. We don't yet surface annual or trailing-twelve-month (TTM) metrics.
