help needed with EUR/USD algo

Hi guys,

I'm new here, but trading for a few years now.
My coding skills are pretty limited.
The Algorithm I want to create is based on EUR/USD only.
The Idea is to buy/sell based on the 1.300 price.
buy when the price is 1.29 sell when price is 1.31.
The rapid small changes should bring great results (Im doing it manually).
the price line for buy and sell should be optimized for the best results.

Any ideas on how to create it?

Welcome Yotam,

The Quantopian database only has stocks/ETFs. Would your algorithm work with currency ETFs (e.g. http://etfdb.com/2013/the-ultimate-guide-to-currency-etf-trading)? Another option is to load external data, via the fetcher functionality. I don't have experience with it; perhaps someone else can chime in? A third option is to run zipline offline (if you'll be providing your own data, this may be the way to go).

At what frequency do you anticipate needing to trade? Minute-level? Daily? Weekly?

Regarding you coding skills, you'll need to learn some basic Python (see https://www.quantopian.com/posts/learning-python), understand how the Quantopian backtester works (help doc and examples), and be able to define the appropriate conditional logic with your code. The backtester is very flexible, but as a consequence, there is a learning curve.

Hi Grant,

Thanks for the detailed reply.
I'm currently using it on 15min and 30min level.
This method wont work with currency ETFs as they are not as "stable" as the EUR/USD (last 2 years).
The whole idea is to set 3 baselines that will be the buy/sell indicators.
If the baselines are not stable it just wont work.

O.K. I'm guessing that you need the Forex, like lots of other folks have requested on Quantopian. Perhaps someone else can advise the best approach? Out of my league...
