Happy 3rd Birthday to Our Community!

It's been three years since this community started. That was the day, all of us together, that we started a revolution in the world of finance.

The community started with a few hundred people on the waiting list, none of them sure what they'd signed up for. The numbers grew as the platform did, and today we have thousands of members, with thousands more joining each month. The techology started with a backtester and some data, then more data, then paper trading. Paper trading turned into real money trading. The Open started some serious competition. Then fundamental data was added, and most recently the research platform.

There's a lot to look back on.

3yearsofbacktests

  • Our community has grown to more than 45,000 quants
  • We've run over 6.5 million years of backtests
  • Executed 300,000 cells in research
  • Cloned 100,000 backtests and notebooks that were shared in the community
  • Live traded over 19,000 algorithms with real-time data

Birthdays aren't just about looking back. They're also about looking forward.

  • There is $600,000 allocated for trading to our community today. We're close to allocating money to our first non-contest, for-the-hedge-fund algorithm. That will be followed by millions of dollars of allocation more, with trading profits flowing back to the algorithm author.
  • I think you're going to love our new framework for filtering down to your tradeable stocks and writing factors for ranking them. Alpha users are getting first looks right now, and a wider beta will follow.
  • I'm sure you've noticed interesting new data from Estimize, Accern and EventVestor. That is the tip of the data iceberg.
  • There's more to the trading world than US equities, and US futures will be tradeable on Quantopian before you know it.
  • QuantCon 2015 had an amazing lineup with a couple hundred smart, engaged attendees. QuantCon 2016 is an event you don't want to miss.
  • Perhaps it's time to add another brokerage? I don't want to promise too much!

Thank you all for being with us, for making this community what it is. I hope we celebrate many birthdays together going forward.

Happy coding,

Dan

P.S. If you want a chuckle, check out the first post on Quantopian. It's a classic, over-leveraged, AAPL-only algorithm without even a hint of wisdom. defc0n1 knew what he was talking about when he doubted it. And when you look at the source code you'll notice things like handle_data was once (data, context), reversed from the handle_data (context, data) that we know and love today.
