Econometrics undergraduate. How should I prepare my way through this career?

Econometrics major with minor experience with R. I studied markets for a few years, but I never started trading until right after March crash. I want to get into the field of quantitative finances, but I still don't know the optimal career pathway for myself so I am willing to hear some advice.

Questions:
What should be my expectations/attitute/mindset before getting into this field?
What should be the topics/concepts to master before getting into this work?
What are the skills and software I should familiar myself with before getting into this work?
What are my odds of succeeding in this field if I were to pick up this expertise at my current academic level independently?
Right after graduation, am I better off working for myself as a quant or should I get a salaried job (that probably wouldn't involve me doing quant work) first?
