Is there any way to go step-by-step through your code and track variables?

You can add log statements in your algorithm: https://www.quantopian.com/help#ide-logging. Just use log.debug(string), log.info(string), etc. You can also just print statements by using print(string). Log statements appear in the log window in the IDE, and on the log tab in the full backtest results.
We currently don't have a way to interactively debug using breakpoints, but that's something we've been thinking about a lot and we'd love to do it at some point.
