Best way to check trade status?

Is there an effective method for checking on the status of a particular trade during runtime? context.portfolio.positions[contex.stock].amount & context.portfolio.positions[context.stock].cost_basis only return the values after the purchase, but if called after selling the shares, they are the same. I presume its because it doesn't get updated until the next instance of handle_data?

Thanks for any insight.

Take a look at the status on the order object: https://www.quantopian.com/help#api-orderobj

For example, if you want to see if an order was cancelled you can do:

def handle_data(context, data):
  my_order_id = order(symbol('aapl'), 100) # order 100 shares of AAPL and return the order id
  my_order = get_order(my_order_id) # this will return the order object
  if my_order.status == 2: # check if order has been cancelled
    # more code logic

perfect, thank you

quick clarification - does the order object apply to the entire trade or is there an order object when buying a stock and then another order object for selling it?

The order object is applied to the action take in that single code line. In my example above, it is the single action of ordering 100 shares of AAPL in the variable "my_order_id".

If you have a second order to close the position, this will have a second order object.
