backtesting of sector stocks

I would like to backtest a strategy in which if I buy top three stocks in each major sector every year and sell the one that loose more than 10% after one year. For this I need to know which was the best performing stock in each sector and what was its price for last few years. Could any one please help how can I do this or where I can find historical data of best performing stocks in each sector .

Thanks

Hi Dave,

I think if you break this algorithm down into its logical parts you'll be off to a good start:

1) You're looking for best performing stock (momentum) -> Check out this tutorial
2) You're looking to buy the top three stocks in each major sector -> Check out this sample algo
3) You're looking for historical data of these best performing stocks -> Check out history() method

Take a look and let me know if you have any questions on those

Thanks Song.

I am a newbie to this. Could you please point me to a place which allow me to put all this together. Do I need to have expertise in Python? I am basically a MATLAB person.

Thanks

Dave, a good working knowledge of python is recommended. You need not be an expert to start with these concepts.
